Dress Code Policy

Students are expected to be neat and clean, well groomed and dressed for school as the special place that it is.   It is the responsibility of the parent that students wear appropriate attire.  Good grooming is conducive to good learning in a well-run school.   Clothing should be appropriate for school and promote a positive attitude of learning.

Providence Catholic School takes pride in our students’ appearance.  Our dress code sets certain standards for certain situations.  If you’re not sure it’s right, don’t wear it.

Dress Code

GIRLS AND BOYS:

Tops, Blouses, Shirts

  • Solid color- may have a small logo
  • Must have collar
  • May be long sleeved or short sleeved
  • Turtlenecks
  • Providence wear

Sweaters and Sweater vests

  • Solid color
  • Plain
  • Worn over solid color top/blouse/shirt/turtleneck that has a collar

Pants

  • Dockers style
  • Cargo style
  • Corduroy
  • Cotton/cotton twill/cotton polyester blend
  • Navy blue, black, tan, gray or khaki (green, tan, olive, brown)

Shorts/Capris

  • Walking shorts only – no shorter than mid-thigh and no longer than top of knee cap
  • Navy blue, black, tan, gray or khaki (green, tan, olive, brown) 
  • May be worn in the months of September, May and June only

Skorts, Skirts, Jumpers

  • No higher than mid-thigh
  • Navy blue, black, tan, gray or khaki (green, tan, olive, brown)

ALL STUDENTS:

  • Shirts or blouses must be tucked in at all times.
  • Belts are optional.
  • Socks must be worn at all times.  This does include when sandals are worn.
  • Boots are to be worn on snowy or wet days.  Students must have a pair of shoes to change into for the classroom.
  • No dangling earrings may be worn.
  • Hairstyles must be groomed and styled in a traditional manner.  Dyed, bleached or highlighted hair is not allowed.
  • No make-up is to be worn.
  • Only clear fingernail polish may be worn and on the west campus only.

STUDENTS MAY NOT WEAR:

  • Hats inside the classroom
  • Mesh shirts
  • Tee shirts
  • Tank tops
  • Sports jerseys
  • Muscle shirts
  • Halter tops
  • Middy tops
  • Tube tops
  • Tops with low cut neckline
  • Sweatshirts – except Providence wear
  • Hoodies – except Providence wear and only from December 1 until March 31
  • Fleece tops of any kind
  • Oversized or baggy pants
  • Cargo style pants or shorts
  • Jeans or jean shorts
  • Cutoff, fringe shorts
  • Spandex pants, shorts, body suits
  • Fatigues
  • Sweat outfits or sweatpants
  • Shoes or sandals that are not secured to the feet (e.g. clogs, flip flops, jellies)

CONSEQUENCES:

All students (K-8) will conform to the dress code.  Any student not abiding the dress code will have the following consequences:

1st offense:  

Note home to be signed.  If not returned the following school day the loss of recess/break and the parent will be called.

2nd offense:  

The parent is called and notified the student is not in dress code.  A second offense letter will be sent home for the parent’s signature.   If the note is not returned the next day the child will miss recess/break until the signed note is returned.

3rd offense:  

The student will remain in the school office until the parent or contact person brings appropriate clothing for the child.

Students may receive disciplinary actions (i.e.: detention, punch, red light) as well at the discretion of school faculty/staff for infractions of the dress code.

Please remember it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure the child is in dress code.  If there is any question as to whether the article is within dress code or not, do not purchase it/wear it.  Rule of thumb is if you have to question it, we will have to question it.

MASS DAY APPAREL:

From May 1st through September 30th shorts within the dress code may be worn to Mass at the discretion of the parent.

GYM CLOTHES:

All students in grades 5-8 are required to wear gym clothes for Physical Education classes.  T-shirts, shorts, sweat clothes, and wind suits are allowed for Phy. Ed.  Gym shoes and socks must also be worn.  Failure to be prepared for Phy. Ed. class may be reflected in the quarterly grade.

CASUAL DRESS DAYS:

Casual dress days are scheduled the first Wednesday (of the month) throughout the year to allow students a “break” from the regular dress code. Additional casual days will be announced 'impromptu' by the school principal.  The attire for these days is casual, but still reflective of us being a Catholic school.  This means that all attire must be in good condition (clean and without tears/holes).  We want to allow our students free choice without looking ‘sloppy.’  Casual attire may be jeans and a t-shirt.  However, that t-shirt must be appropriate for school and should not advertise rock groups, cigarettes, etc.  They may have a logo on them.  A plain, printed, or character t-shirt would be acceptable.  Zipper vests, fleece, corduroy, and other casual styles are all acceptable.  Girl’s shirts must cover the midriff and not cut off at the beltline.  Make-up and any nail color other than clear are still not acceptable.

If your child comes to school in casual dress that does not portray our Catholic environment, they will not turn t-shirts inside out, but will be sent to the office until appropriate clothing can be brought to them by a parent or emergency contact.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school office.
